Religion

The most commonly practiced religion in Brazil is Roman Catholicism. There is no state or official religion for Brazil. Religion is very important and there is not a distinct separation between church and state, so the goverment has to be careful to not upset the church when taking action on certain situations. Brazil is actually considered the largest Roman Catholic country in the world! Both popular and traditional forms of Catholicism are practiced throughout the country.

Although Roman Catholics are most common in the country there are also other religions practiced throughout the land. Syncretism, the combination of different forms of belief or practice, is common in Brazil as well. Umbanda is the religion which blends Roman Catholicism in with Kardecian spiritualism. Candomble is a religion that was brought to Brazil by slaves from Nigeria. It is also commonly practiced by many people.   Today,Buddhism is also practiced by a small portion of Brazilians. Another religion that is rapidly growing in Brazil is Protestantism.
