Rio de Janeiro is located in southeastern Brazil. The name of this city, and state as well, is Portuguese for " January River". This city was the capital of Brazil and the Portuguese Empire at one time. Rio de Janeiro's population is approximately 6,094,183. These people live in an area of 1182.3 km² (456.5 mi²), which makes Rio de Janeiro Brazil's second largest city. This city is famous for many things including it's Carnival celebrations, beautiful natural setting, tourist beaches, pavements decorated with cream and black pattern mosaics and much more. Salvador
